When you are looking for a new job, you will need to write a resume, and make sure that your skills and experience are up-to-date. Sometimes we take courses we forget to add in, or leave out something an employer would like to hear about, like volunteering. So what should a resume really cover?

Contact Details, and Your Employment Objective

Of course, when you are writing a resume your contact details are the most important, and these should be right at the top of the page. The next thing to add is an employment objective. Not everyone uses this but it can show an employer that you are particularly interested in their job offer, and that you are aiming for a career in their industry. Before updating your resume, look at job adverts you want to apply for and write your employment objective so that it answers the ad. Why do you really want that job, and where do you hope it will lead you?

Qualifications and Work History

Next list your qualifications when you write a resume. Make sure that they are relevant to the positions you are going after. List any degrees or third level education achievements. Don’t forget to include any industry certificates you have, especially if they are accredited. If you have attended day courses or taken a distance learning course, list these under “other courses”. Add in your job history next. Start with the most recent, or current position, and work your way backwards over the past five to ten years. For each job, add the title of your role, the company you worked for, and the dates you worked there. Then, write a little bit about your key roles and responsibilities in that job. Don’t forget to make sure that your resume reflects the work history and qualifications that will be most relevant to the new job you want to apply for.

Experience, Skills and References

The next step when you write a resume is to include a section on your experience and skills. Although your work history and qualifications may show these, consider other things that you have done that may be of interest to a new employer. Have you spent time volunteering? Have you helped a fund raising team, or sat on the management board of a company? When you write a resume, any other experiences and skills that you have can be added in at this point. You can also write a resume that includes a section on your interests, especially if they are in line with the jobs you are searching for. Finish your resume by listing two references, or by letting a prospective employer know that your references are available on request.

When you’ve completed your resume with your employment objective, qualifications, work history, experience, interest and references, you are ready to send it out or upload it onto job search websites. Good luck with finding your new job!
